Chapter 22: Liz

The first thing Liz did when she got to her hotel room was lay down on the bed, closed her eyes and settled in for a good long nap.

However, sleep did not come, no matter how tightly she screwed her eyes shut. Eventually, feeling more fed up than ever, she did the ungainly roll that meant she could sit up from her bed without damaging her back muscles. She checked her phone, but there were no new messages since she had called Dave when they arrived at the hotel. It had choked her up a little how relieved he had sounded to hear from her. Ridiculous, really, when it had only been a couple of days. But Dave was one of those men that turned into a worrier as soon as the baby bump appeared. Of course, this time his worry had turned out to be justified, but as she had told him on the phone, it hadn’t been her that had been murdered.

Poor Viola. Liz couldn’t help but feel that if they had chosen to have the hen-do in a hotel like this one rather than the cottage in the woods, she might still be alive.

There was a knock at the door and Liz got up to answer it, glad that she hadn’t fallen asleep after all.

A female police officer with bobbed ginger hair and freckles across her nose stood at the door.

“Is it all right to come in?” She asked.

“Of course,” Liz said. There was a single chair at the dressing table, so Liz let the other woman have that while she sat on the edge of the bed.

“I’m Ruby Callaghan and I’m here to take your statement. Before we start, would you like a glass of water?” The woman glanced nervously at Liz’s bump.

“I’m fine thank you,” Liz said.

“All right. If I can start by taking some personal details. What is it you do for a living?”

This should be interesting, Liz thought. “I’m a private investigator. My friend, Bernie Paterson, set up an agency and I’m her partner.”

Callaghan looked shocked, then looked down at her tablet for a moment. “You’re a private investigator. But you just happened to be on a hen do where there was a murder, right?”

“That’s correct.”

The woman stared at her for a second, then went back to her script. “How did you know the deceased?”

“We met through the school. I think it was Bernie that got to know her first. No, that’s not right, I met her before that. She was good at doing nails, not those super long ones that the youngsters like, but proper manicures, you know? She offered to do mine, so I went round to her place.”

“Where was this?”

“A flat overlooking the Abbey. Nice place, very silver and glittery if you know what I mean.”

“And she asked you to come on her hen-do?”

“Yes. Me, Bernie and Mary. We all work together at the agency, and we had all met Viola a few times. We were sort of surprised to be asked, but then, by the sound of it so was everyone else.
